Johnston is located northwest of Des Moines in Polk County. It is bordered on the north by Saylorville Lake and on the east by the Des Moines River. To the west is the community of Grimes and to the south is the city of Urbandale. Beaver Creek flows through the city.
The Johnston area was settled in the late 1800s when a sawmill was erected near what is now Beaver Drive. Later it became a train station stop for trains traveling between Des Moines and Perry. Over the past two decades, the city has seen significant growth, and today it is a thriving suburb of Des Moines.
