About Urbandale, IA

Incorporated in 1917, Urbandale has long been a satellite city of Des Moines. It was once home to four coal mines, multiple farms, and the end of a streetcar line that served commuters traveling to and from Des Moines.

Population growth really took off in Urbandale during the 1950s and 60s, and the community has seen steady growth since then. Although the coal mines and streetcar station are now closed, Urbandale is still thriving thanks to its location along the major transportation routes of the Urban Loop.

No matter where you live in Urbandale, it’s easy to access Des Moines and a number of other suburbs. West Des Moines is to the south, Waukee to the west, Johnston to the north, and Beaverdale to the east. Downtown Des Moines is just a 15-minute drive away depending on traffic.
