About Waukee, IA

Waukee was established in 1869 and officially incorporated as a city in 1878. It was once home to the Shuler Mine, which was the biggest producer of coal in Iowa. Up until the mine closed in 1949, the community consisted mainly of residents working for the coal mine and their families.

From the 1950s onwards, Waukee has seen significant growth. Many businesses have set up in the city thanks to its close proximity to Des Moines and lower cost of real estate. The most notable of these is Apple, which established a large data center campus here in 2017.

Despite its rapid growth over the past few decades, Waukee still maintains a quiet, suburban atmosphere with attractive subdivisions, plenty of green spaces, and family-friendly venues for entertainment and recreational activities.
