About West Des Moines, IA
Historically West Des Moines was populated by the Fox and Sac tribes, who hunted and fished along the Raccoon River. European colonists settled here during the 1800s and incorporated the city as Valley Junction in 1893. The name referred to the fact that the area was a junction for numerous railroad lines.
By the 1930s, the Depression was in full swing, so members of the community decided to change the name of the city in an effort to attract new industries. In 1938, the city was officially renamed West Des Moines. By the 1950s, the economy was back up and running and the city saw a development boom.
Today West Des Moines is a flourishing city that spans four counties including Polk, Dallas, Warren, and Madison. The city is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area, making it a city within a city. Downtown Des Moines is just a 15-minute drive from West Des Moines. The city is bordered by a number of attractive communities including Waukee, Clive, and Urbandale.
