The area where Windsor Heights is now located was mainly home to coal mines at the turn of the 20th century. It wasn’t until the Colby family bought land in the area and started paving roads that it began to transform into a thriving community. The area was officially incorporated as a city in 1941 and named after Windsor Elementary School in Des Moines.
